I didn't know about WMVY (aka MVY) until I read an article about WBUR buying WMVY's transmitter, which will soon leave the station as an Internet-only broadcaster. This got me curious, so I found their website and discovered they're having a pledge drive to raise $600,000 so they to continue broadcasting as an commercial-free, online radio station.

They play an eclectic mix of classic rock and some current music.

If you'd like to support them, or give them a listen, visit http://www.mvyradio.com/

They have multiple channels to listen, in addition to the live broadcast.

Now that Thanksgiving is almost upon us, I thought I should share this episode of "WKRP in Cincinnati: called "Turkeys Away". It's the story of the station trying to give away 20 live turkeys at a shopping mail by tossing them out of a helicopter. It's one of their best episodes.

If for some reason you've never seen WKRP, you can read a bit about the show and the characters at:

Tomorrow night, Wednesday, the Museum of Science is showing a short documentary (30 min) about a giant Tesla coil that has been built in New Zealand. It's followed by a talk and a demo ("We'll kick it up a notch").

The Boston Globe article says that Steampunk costumes are encouraged and the three best costumes get to go inside the Faraday cage during the demo.

Tickets are $15 and can be bought online at MoS site (there's a $1.50 fee).

(The Boston Globe article has more info about the event and the film than the MoS site)

I'm going, and probably will get a quick meal before the event at the MoS.

It's been a while since I've been to the lightning demo at the MoS, but I think you might want to bring earplugs.

Paula Cole (famous for "Where have all the cowboys gone?") is trying to raise money for her next album via Kickstarter. She's not as flashy as Amanda F. Palmer, but I think she's worth supporting.

A $25 contribution will get an autographed CD.

The campaign closes tomorrow, Monday Oct 29, 11:59pm EDT.

In July, two Swedes flew over Belarus dropping 800 teddy bears with parachutes and pro-democracy messages.

Since then two generals and the foreign minister have been fired and journalists and bloggers have been either fined or thrown in jail for publishing photos of the bears.

Perhaps after years of tight control, teddy bears might lead to change in Belarus under President Lukashenko, aka "The Last European Dictator".

I do this too often, so if I owe you an email, please take this as evidence that you're in the latter category. (If I don't owe you any email, it probably means that I didn't postpone it for too long.)

Someone didn't pay attention when they made the design for this Pecorino Romano cheese label. When I saw this in the grocery store, I had to share it.

If you like superhero movies, "The Avengers" is a fun movie.

If you like staying to watch the credits for easter eggs. There are two. One at the start of the scrolling credits (that give hints about future movies) and another at the end of the credits that is silly (it follows up on a throw away line near the end of the movie).

Waltham's Steampunk Festival is happening May 11-13. Groupon is offering half-price tickets. But the reason I'm posting is that I was amused by recognizing the violinist with the blue hair in the banner on the festival's website

I've been having fun making things out of PVC pipes.  Last summer, I made a frame of PVC pipe to support bird netting over the blueberries (we tried using bamboo and green balls for joints but they didn't work well).

  A. wanted some sort of protection for young plants from birds (we already have a 4' high fence surrounding the raised veggie bed to keep out deer, turkeys, rabbits, and ground hogs).  I ended up building a plastic frame out of PVC pipes to go over the existing fence and attach to the side of the barn.  Over the frame will be placed bird netting.  I made the frame higher on the barn side, so if we cover it with plastic to make a temporary green house in the spring, the water will run off of the roof.

For the second night of Passover, I made latkes from frozen hasbrown mix instead of grating and then squeezing out the excess water from the shredded potatoes. I like baking them instead of frying them because you don't have to deal with hot oil that spits and a house that smells of oil for days. This makes about 18 latkes.

If you like your latkes with a little bit of oil, you can grease the pan.

Here's are two different articles reporting on the same research article involving mice, Vikings, and genetics.

Where Vikings went, mice followed

Published: March. 19, 2012 at 2:50 PM

YORK, England, March 19 (UPI) -- When Vikings spread across Europe and into the New World, researchers say, they took one unintended "guest" along on their journeys -- the humble house mouse.

In addition to the domestic livestock such as horses, sheep, goats and chickens they took to colonies in Scotland, Ireland, Iceland, Greenland and possibly Newfoundland, they inadvertently took pest species such as mice with them, a study in the journal BMC Evolutionary Biology reported.

Apparently the latest hot item to shoplift is Tide laundry detergent. Not only is it easy to sell on the streets (popular and no serial numbers to be traced), drug dealers are taking it in lieu of cash.

Last week, I was out shopping and I found Valentine Day themed spatulas, which reminded me of the Aunt Jemima Treatment scene from Stripes.

Then this week, just before I go grocery shopping, I read a comic strip about shredded cheese at the grocery store.

Would anyone like a couple of canceled stamps from Hong Kong? I recently received a small package from Hong Kong with three bird stamps (egret, magpie, & eagle).
