Joining the meme of various friends

10 things I've done that (I think) no one else on my LJ friends list has done
  1. Have 1,400+ SF books in my house.
  2. The only member of my family (parents, sister, her husband, wife) not to have an advanced degree.
  3. Worked as a volunteer at a military base of a foreign country.
  4. Appeared in a photograph on the front page of a city's newspaper at a marijuana smoke-in at age 10 (I didn't inhale).
  5. Never consumed alcohol (except for religious reasons (and then no more than a taste)) or illicit drugs.
  6. Tried smoking a cigarette when I was 4 (my aunt left them behind after visiting and my father thought it would be a good way to discourage me from smoking -- it worked).
  7. Climbed up a ladder to the roof of my parents' house when I was 3.
  8. Drove a car with a manual transmission before I turned 13, in a parking lot.
  9. Have driven at 120mph+ in my car, legally.
  10. Married Ann M. T.

Some others: went to elementary school in both the US and Canada, my great uncle wrote the pilot for the TV show Kung Fu, met James Taylor back stage because his father worked with my mother, had tea with Donny York of Sha-Na-Na, given a ride in a race car by an English Baronet, ...

Hmm. I did a 4 day volunteer program in the Israeli army; I don't know if that counts for #3. As for #5, other than a few tastes of alcoholic beverages to determine that I can't deal with anything (ick), I haven't had any, and I've very definitely not done any recreational drugs.

Okay, that's weird. I don't know why that came out as anonymous, but that was me.

Actually, I match you on #2. I've got a brother with a Masters in Education from Harvard, a mother with an MAT from Yale, a father with a PhD in physics from Yale, and my partner has a Masters in Divinity from Harvard.

Me? I gotta rock. Oh, and an Associate's degree.

actually, ben could one-up you on this. I have a Ph.D. Both his parents and his sister do, too. And his brother-in-law has an MD (and is a very cool guy!). And he didn't mention his father-in-law (my dad) who also has a Ph.D....

Well, I don't technically /have/ in-laws, but Calluna's mom has a PhD in linguistics and her dad has a Masters in Literature. And her brother is some form of lawyer but I don't know what his degree is.

And my brother's girlfriend has a Masters in Education.

Um, anyway.

You saw my house. I suspect I match you on #1 (although I'm not positive anymore -- I'm down from > 3000 books to about 2200 since my move, but I know that more than half are SF.

I also match you on #5.

Whether or not #2 applies to me depends on whether I include that person who was disowned as part of the family...

Hm, I wonder if anyone else I know has had a relative disowned.

I think [livejournal.com profile] teddywolf matches you on #2 but I'm not sure if his mother has an advanced degree.

had tea with Donny York of Sha-Na-Na

I sent email to the Sha-Na-Na (http://www.shanana.com/) website yesterday and I got a reply from Donny today confirming that it was him who came over to my parents' house when he briefly lived across the street.

It's a bit hard to believe that they played at Woodstock, nearly 40 years ago.

I'm tempted to comment "piker." I'm quite certain we're over 2000, but I've no idea how much over that.

Have driven at 120mph+ in my car, legally.

Not sure if ahf has done quite this speed but she's probably close.

got you on #1

yeah, I haven't actually counted, but I'm pretty sure we are over that number. Up to over 20 bookcases worth, but a couple of those are reference texts and mysteries. Hmmm, need to catalog the book collection.
