I decided to become one of the cool kids and signed up for dreamwidth. It sounds like it has some useful features (for managing flists that LJ doesn't have) that make it worth checking out.

Dreamwidth Invite

If anyone is interested, here is how I got a Dreamwidth account without getting an invite from a friend.

Yesterday afternoon (before the account signup opened up), I used my LJ OpenID (deguspice.livejournal.com) to sign into Dreamwidth (read-only access). After I setup the account, I clicked on the button to verify my email address. This morning, there was an email from Dreamwidth saying that in appreciation for my confirming my email address, they invited my to signup for an account.
