Up in Vermont, the national ads for McDonalds preceded the franchise actually showing up. So local diner-owner Nector Rorris (whom some of you may have heard of from the Phish album "Upstairs at Nector's") opened up a drive-in called "The Lure", which featured 15 cent hamburgers.
When McDonalds finally did show up, they were compared unfavorably to The Lure by locals, but the drive-by customers finally boosted McD's sales enough to convince Nector to ditch The Lure and devote himself to the diner. Sure enough, his location was purchased by Burger King.
I barely remember eating at The Lure; I have no idea how the food was.
