Airport Travel Advice
Jan. 2nd, 2004 06:35 pm- Get plenty of sleep the night before you depart
- Bring a photo ID
- Always carry a photocopy of your passport in your back pack.
3.) turns out to be useful when you arrive at the airport and you discover that because you failed to do 1.), you forgot to do 2.)
Fortunately the person at the ticket counter accepted the photocopy of my passport, but she had the computer mark my boarding pass with a row of "SSSSS" in the bottom right corner. This is a flag for the TSA folks to give me a thorough inspection.
At the metal detectors, the TSA folks were friendly, but professional. After xraying everything and hand searching my backpack they used a hole punch in the shape of a teddy bear to indicate that they checked me out.
Once I got through the security screening, I called a friend (Karen K.) and asked her if she could go to my house and send my wallet to me in California via an overnight service. Fortunately she had a key to the house and the code for the alarm system.
On the way back home I didn't have any problems with airport security, even though we are now at Orange Alert (but not when we left for California).

Date: 2004-01-02 11:39 pm (UTC)5. carry a padded envelope, and lots of stamps, and a list of a few useful addresses in case #4 does work and they want you to voluntarily give them your property they don't like. screw that. mail it somewhere instead.
but #2 sucks.
it wouldn't suck to have a photocopies of all documents you might need, including emergency contacts, tickets, ids, health insurance cards, etc in case you need them for various lossage. hell, even an inventory list.
