Day 5 (Monday)

From Roofers - 2010

The roofers returned with a bunch of people and attacked the north facing roofs of the house. By the end of the day, the finished all of the north facing roof, except for the portion where the roof of the master bedroom joins the main part of the house. Part of the roof they worked on is over my desk. At some points, the banging got very loud (I felt a bit like Harold Saxon).

Day 6 (Tuesday)

Today, the carpenter showed up to start work on the roof over the master bedroom. Because the bedroom has an uninsulated, cathedral ceiling, we're going to put 5" of rigid foam insulation on top of the old sheathing (after striping the old shingles). To keep the new shingles happy and to prevent future ice dams, on top of the insulation is an air gap and then sitting on top of the insulation on wood spacers is plywood. The product is called "Cool-Vent", a Ventilated Nailbase Insulation Panel from Hunter Panels (another company that makes the panels is Cornell).

After removing the old shingles and the sheathing above the eaves, we can see what bedroom ceiling is composed of. Underneath the sheathing, between the rafters, they nailed 1/2" Homasote boards (compressed paper board), thin spacers, and then 3/8" sheet rock. From inside the bedroom, if I stood in the right place, I could see daylight along the sides of the rafters The lack of insulation and the air gaps probably explains why the bedroom got very cold at night and why there was a little bit of frost under the shingles. Also, if you look carefully at the picture, you can see that some of the rafters tails have rotted away, probably because of moisture from ice dams and the house.

Once the roof had been uncovered, the carpenter started framing the edges of the roof to give it the added thickness for the Cool-Vent panels with one inch of foam, plus the additional four inches of rigid foam panels underneath them (it's cheaper to get the thinner Cool-Vent panels and then buy standard foam panels to provide the extra thickness). By the end of the day, they've got the rigid foam in place and some of the Cool-Vent panels sitting loosely on top of them.

Day 7 (Wednesday)

Covering the bedroom roof with Tyvek and insulated panels seems to be working. Instead of the bedroom temperature dropping to the low 50s at night when the thermostat in the dining room is set to 58 degrees, the thermometer in the bedroom said the temperature was in the low 60s!

We had a light snow fall over night. When the roofers arrived, one of them got out a leaf blower and used it as a "snow blower" to clear off the roof and the staging.

The carpenter has been making good use of the magnolia tree that towers over the roof. He's been using it to store things in its branches. At one point, someone asked him for a piece of trim and he pointed to the pre-cut piece, resting in the branches of the tree.

The 30 cubic yard dumpster, that the roofers said was too big when it arrived is overflowing. There was a lot more debris than they expected.

Day 8 (Thursday)

Today, there was just the carpenter, a roofer, and a laborer. While the carpenter worked on the trim for the new roof, the roofer worked on the flat roof above the bedroom (the street facing side of the bedroom roof is a normal sloped roof, the back side of the bedroom roof is a essentially a full width dormer with a flat roof. It's covered with Tyvek, 5" of rigid foam, and a rolled roof.

At the end of the day, the roofer arranged with the carpenter to finish installing the last couple of rows of shingles and the ridge vent on tomorrow (Friday).

When they started on the bedroom roof, they removed the old siding on the side of the "dormer". I had a couple pieces of primed novelty siding hiding in the barn but I wasn't sure if it would be enough, so I emailed the carpenter who was planning to come down on the weekend to work on the kitchen to bring some more novelty siding. (Novelty siding resembles tongue-and-grove siding, except that the top inch is concave)

Day 9 (Friday)

Today, it was just the carpenter for the roof and a laborer to work a little more on cleaning up the yard. They didn't give the laborer a magnetic "nail rake" to pickup nails, so I provided him with my home made device, a fishing magnet on the end of a chain, which worked well for finding hidden nails.

The carpenter's to-do list for Monday is a)install the soffit vents (the roofers didn't leave a 3" hole saw) b) install the rest of the siding, c) finish the ridge vent, d) cover up the nail holes inside the bedroom where some of the nails holding up the sheetrock backed out. When I told the carpenter that more novelty siding will be arriving over the weekend, he was very happy. Novelty siding is not easy to find (it's not carried at Home Depot or the local lumberyard).

Monday will be Day 10.
