RIP: my-cast.com

I know it's a bit silly, but I am sad about the demise of the weather site my-cast.com. It had been my go to website when I wanted to know what today or tomorrow's weather would be. I've been using it for something like 10 years. It has a nice simple UI. At the top of the page was a static weather map, with a play button to show you an animated version of the past hour's radar images. Below that it had a summary of the weather for the next five days. It also had a button to switch to its predictions of the weather for the next couple of hours. It also used a cookie, so the next time you visited the site it would remember the town you searched for.
That was it for the UI. No ads, silly articles, extraneous details - just the information you wanted for a quick summary of the weather. Unlike weather.gov, it worked in both the US and Europe (I didn't try other continents).
I used the website last night, but I went there this morning, the website was replaced with a photo of a sunset on a lake and the message:
Effective July 15, 2015, the my-cast.com website has been shut down.
Thank you for being a patron of our site for the last 15+ years.

I'll probably switch to the Weather Underground, but their UI is not as simple as my-cast was.

Date: 2015-07-18 09:23 pm (UTC)"Dark Sky" doesn't seem to be available for Android. But since I spend most of my time at my PC, I'd looking for replacement website.
On my phone, I will occasionally use the Weather Underground app, but for a quick check of the weather, I used to visit the my-cast site on my phone (I see little need to download an app if the website works fine on the phone).

Date: 2016-12-08 02:48 pm (UTC)I've just moved from KK (slimkat rom) to MM (CM13) and discovered that the app is now gone from the amazon app store as well.
I extracted the APK from the first phone and installed it on the second - and it's working fine.
I don't expect that that apk would work for anyone who had not previously purchased it as the app is not cracked - from looking at intents, it's still checking with the appstore that I have permissions to run it.
I still prefer the animated weather map over anything else out there.

Date: 2016-12-08 03:08 pm (UTC)I'm not surprised that the app is still working, as it represents no additional overhead for Garmin, who I'd expect is doing a lot of belt tightening (consider what's happened to their market the last few years). They probably withdrew the app because they didn't want the cost associated with supporting it.
The android app, which was only ever available through the amazon app store, now is no longer there. So it's only shut down in the sense that you can't buy it anymore. However, if you bought the pro version when it was available, and you've moved to a new handset, you can extract the apk (I used APK Extractor) from your old phone, copy it over then install it on your new phone.
Assuming you install the amazon app store on your new phone, it'll work fine - or at least mine does right now (moved from KK to MM)
Note that all my phones are 'rooted'. If the phone you currently have the app running on is not rooted, this may not work for you. YMMV and all that.
