[livejournal.com profile] quietann asked that I move the hose and water the grape vine.  So I went out to the faucet and starting hauling on the hose so I could relocate it.  About halfway through the process, I felt a sting on my palm.  I looked down at my hand and the hose, but I didn't see anything, so I assumed that it was caused by a thorn that might have got embedded in the hose (there's a couple of thistles in the area).  I continued pulling the hose towards me, when I felt a sting at the back of my hand.  This time I looked up and saw a small swarm of wasps.  Deciding that descretion was the better part of valour.  I immediately left the area and went into the house.

Not knowing if I might be allergic (I haven't been stung since I was 12 or 13), I took some antihistamines.  I also ran my hand under some cold water because the two sites *hurt* (I don't normally swear, but this time I felt it was appropriate).

From the house I looked out a window toward the area where the wasps were, but I didn't see a swarm of wasps flying around.  So I went back out and looked at the area near the faucet, again, I didn't see any wasps flying around.  Then I crouched down and looked under the metal hanger for the hose.  Underneath it was a small nest with a bunch of wasps moving around on it.

I remembered seeing a can of wasp spray in the closet.  Usually I won't hurt try to kill insects in my house (I'll carry beetles out of the house) but this time I wanted revenge! The can said wait until evening to spray, but with the heatwave we're having, I doubt it would be cool enough for them to be passive at night.  So I grabbed the can and went back the nest.  Standing back about 15' I crouched down and sprayed at the nest.  It was very gratifying to watch the wasps drop off the nest.

Final Status:
A bunch of wasps are dead, the grape vine is being watered. and my hand is still sore but there is no sign of the stings, not even a welt.
