Given all of the snow that has fallen, please make sure that you have a second exit from your house. It took me a while, but I shoveled a path to the side door through the hip deep snow.

Hopefully it won't be necessary, but if there's an emergency, it probably would be useful to have a secondary exit.

Luckily our back door opens under a roof. And we have the garage doors that can be opened manually if necessary. If we have a real emergency and can't use a door, my bathroom window opens onto the porch roof and it's only a seven foot drop to the upper porch.

But excellent advice. During the Blizzard of '78, my parents could not get the front door open due to drifting snow. Thankfully, the back door opened in, and when it was opened it also had a drift halfway up the doorframe.

2-story houses are much safer under these conditions; evacuate by jumping out a 2nd-floor window into a 4' snow pile.

The problem with jumping out a window is that you then have to make your way through 3' deep snow.
