Yesterday Ann and I went off searching for apples and we went to Russell Orchards in Ipswich and Cider Hill Farm in Amesbury (and we crossed the state line to say "hi" to J,J, & A).

Ann got lots of different varieties of apples from the two orchards, and I decided to do a taste test of cider donuts. So at both places I got a half-dozen of donuts. At J, J, & A's house we carefully analyzed the donuts. Our conclusion was that fresh, hot cider donuts are much better than cold, greasy donuts. But in comparing the flavor of the two donuts, we decided that the cider donuts from Russell Orchards have more of a taste of apple. The Cider Hill donuts are fluffy (and also come in a sugar-coated variety), while the Russell Orchards are more solid, like a Dunkin Donut donut.

At Cider Hill, they are very sneaky and they put the fresh hot donuts in a display case next to the check-out line so you're standing next to the donuts while you're waiting in line. Once you've paid for your purchases, you can watch the donut making machine in operation. It's neat watching the perfectly formed toroids fall into the hot oil, and then puff up as then float along in the oil. Half way along their journey, there's a paddle wheel that flips the donuts over so both sides can get equally cooked.
