Buzz Buzz Thump!

What goes "buzz buzz snap crackle THUMP!"

A tree being cut down.

Sitting about 300' away, and on the second floor, I felt the tree go THUMP when it hit the ground.

They've been clearing trees for the development across the street. Today they started soon after 7am. The noise of the chain saw overwhelmed earplugs and a white noise machine. :(

Until things quiet down, I'm planning on going to sleep by midnight on "school nights."

I have a large industrial-sized box of disposable earplugs (NRR 33 dB) at home. I could give you and Ann several pairs, if you think that'd help. I should point out that these are the same brand we used to use at the steel plant to muffle the noise from an electric arc furnace, so they're pretty good.

I would not mind a pair of those to see if they work better than the ones I've got...not sure when I would see you, though...

I dunno. we could arrange to meet someplace, maybe? In any event I'll likely be at the End of Summer party in a few weeks.

Borrow their equipment at night to clear your own land?

It's bad enough they are cutting down the trees across the street, why would he want to do the same?

One of the tractors is a rather scary bit of machinery (it looks like it could have been designed by SRL (http://srl.org/")). It's designed to grab a standing tree with its arms and then below the arms it has a spinning disk to cut the tree down). It'll then lift up the tree and carry the tree to where it wants to place it.

I saw a nastier version of one of those on a Learning Channel show once. The big one could grab a tree, slice it off at the bottom, and then shoot it through a channel, whacking off all the branches and cutting off 12-foot sections on the fly, about one every second or two. It destroyed trees *fast*. Eek. Apparently, it was mostly computer controlled, the operator just told it which tree was the next victim and it did the rest.

Devil's advocate*

Just remember where paper comes from. And lumber for houses and furniture. And bio-mass for fuel pellets...

/Devil's advocate.

*Actually, most of this (in the US) comes from managed tree plantations.
